Sumter Wins The 4A State Championship: The Gamecocks defeated Byrnes 2-0 to win the title at Gilbert High School
Gilbert, SC (WLTX) --- Jordan Montgomery pitched a shutout for the second time this week as Sumter defeated Byrnes 2-0 to win the 4A state championship Friday night at Gilbert High School.
As was the case in Monday's championship series opener, it was a Carolina vs Clemson matchup on the hill as USC signee Jordan Montgomery started for Sumter opposite future Clemson Tiger Daniel Gossett.
But unlike Monday's game that saw Gossett get roughed up, he was in much better control, keeping Sumter scoreless until the fifth inning when the Gamecocks pushed across the only runs of the game.
Montgomery wasn't quite as dominating as he was on Monday when he allowed just one hit, but it was still good enough to keep the Rebels scoreless.
The win gives Sumter its first state championship in baseball since 2006 and it's also the second time this week that a Sumter county school has won a state title on the diamond. On Tuesday, Wilson Hall won the SCISA 3A crown.
